Martand, Kashmir

The revival of Martand sun temple ruins in Jammu and Kashmir, India.

The sun is a daily reminder that the fallen will rise once again.

'Martand Sun Temple' was built in the 8th Century under the reign of king 'Lalitaditya Muktapida' of the Surya dynasty.

It is one of the oldest sun temples and the best example for Kashimiri Temples with Gandharan and Greek influence with trefoil arches, detailed carvings, and a now-ruined pyramidal roof. It faces east so the rising sun could light the sanctum, reflecting its dedication to the Sun God. This is a digital recreation of the broken temple in ruins today. It is made of grey limestone and features a large rectangular courtyard with a central shrine and 84 smaller shrines around it.
