Prasanna Virupaksha temple / Underground Shiva temple is located several meters below the ground level such that the roof of the temple matches the current ground level and sanctum always remains underwater.
The Gopuram was added to the temple complex after the reign of King Krishnadevaraya and was never completed. This is an imaginary interpretation depending upon the literature about the temple and sculptures inside the temple.
